The speaker states that US wood sellerswill ultimately pursue a more ecological friendly way of production in order toreceive the eco-certification from the international organization. He arguesagainst the ideas in the reading passage by contending that none of theabundance of ads, the higher expense, or the attention to the domestic marketis sufficient reason for the local producer to walk away fromeco-certification.
Above all, the speaker insists that localconsumers tend to differentiate among different advertisements, though there isan ocean of labels and ads in the America as the reading suggests. In thereading material, the certification granted by the international institute mayseem unattractive and easily ignored among numerous advertisements and labels. While acknowledging the considerable amount of advertising in the market, thespeaker points out that the consumers treat some ads favorably whiledistrusting the others. Since it is an independent agency that issued theeco-certification, US consumers are quite likely to respond positively toproducts with such certification.
What is more, the lecturer remainsskeptical on the argument that relatively low price is the driving reason forconsumers to choose a product over another. While the author of the passagebelieves in low prices to lure buyers, the speaker demonstrates that customersonly depends their purchasing decisions mainly on prices when one product costssignificantly less than another. As the prices of different wood productsusually differ within the margin of 5%, it is highly likely that people willconsider other things, such as eco-friendliness, when they shop for a woodproduct. Not to mention the consumers have gradually come to realize thenecessity to protect the environment.
Last but not least, the lecturer unveils the inaccuracy in the statement that the local producer will survive and thrivewithout technological improvement. Even though the producers mainly target ondomestic markets and do not feel the necessity to expand overseas, they willstill encounter foreign competitors for that companies in other countries areinterested in the US market. Now that the US consumers are more aware of thenecessity to preserve the biological well being, they are likely to embraceforeign products with eco-certification, leading to a possible decrease in thebusiness for US wood producers. Therefore, despite the possible expense toupgrade the current merchandize into a more efficient and environmentalfriendly one, it is worthwhile for US companies to pursue a higher recyclingrate and lower consumption rate of raw materials in order to remain competitivein the domestic market.
